First ReadingWisdom 2:23—3:9

From the Book of Wisdom

23Because God created man for incorruption, and made him an image of his own everlastingness;24but death entered into the world by the envy of the devil, and those who belong to him experience it.1But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,and no torment will touch them.2In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died.Their departure was considered a disaster,3and their travel away from us ruin, but they are in peace.4For even if in the sight of men they are punished, their hope is full of immortality.5Having borne a little chastening, they will receive great good;because God tested them, and found them worthy of himself.6He tested them like gold in the furnace, and he accepted them as a whole burnt offering.7In the time of their visitation they will shine. They will run back and forth like sparks among stubble.8They will judge nations and have dominion over peoples. The Lord will reign over them forever.9Those who trust him will understand truth. The faithful will live with him in love, because grace and mercy are with his chosen ones.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19

2I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.3My soul shall boast in the Lord. The humble shall hear of it and be glad.

16The Lord’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.17The Lord’s face is against those who do evil,to cut off their memory from the earth.

18The righteous cry, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.19The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

GospelLuke 17:7-10

From the Gospel according to Luke

7But who is there among you, having a servant plowing or keeping sheep, that will say when he comes in from the field,‘Come immediately and sit down at the table’?8Wouldn’t he rather tell him,‘Prepare my supper, clothe yourself properly, and serve me while I eat and drink.Afterward you shall eat and drink’?9Does he thank that servantbecause he did the things that were commanded?I think not.10Even so you also, when you have done all the thingsthat are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants. We have done our duty.’”

Léctio libri Sapiéntiæ

Eccli 31:8-11

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

Ja 1:12

Beátus vir, qui suffert tentatiónem: quóniam, cum probátus fúerit, accípiet corónam vitæ. Allelúja.

Ps 91:13; 91:14

The just man shall flourish like the palm tree, like a cedar of Lebanon shall he grow in the house of the Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:35-40

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:35-40

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let your loins be girt about and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men waiting for their master’s return from the wedding; so that when he comes and knocks, they may straight-way open to him. Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.

Common

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
