Optional memorial: Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

First ReadingAmos 2:6-10, 13-16*

From the Book of Amos

6The Lord says:

“For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four,I will not turn away its punishment, because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals;7They trample the heads of the poor into the dust of the earthand deny justice to the oppressed.A man and his father use the same maiden, to profane my holy name.8They lay themselves down beside every altar on clothes taken in pledge. In the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.9Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks;yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.10Also I brought you up out of the land of Egyptand led you forty years in the wilderness,to possess the land of the Amorite. verses 11–12 are not read13Behold, I will crush you in your place,as a cart crushes that is full of grain.14Flight will perish from the swift. The strong won’t strengthen his force. The mighty won’t deliver himself.15He who handles the bow won’t stand. He who is swift of foot won’t escape. He who rides the horse won’t deliver himself.16He who is courageous among the mightywill flee away naked on that day,”

says the Lord.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 50:16bc-17, 18-19, 20-21, 22-23*

16But to the wicked God says,“What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,17since you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?

18When you saw a thief, you consented with him,and have participated with adulterers.19“You give your mouth to evil.Your tongue frames deceit.

20You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother’s son.21You have done these things, and I kept silent. You thought that I was just like you.I will rebuke you, and accuse you in front of your eyes.

22“Now consider this, you who forget God,lest I tear you into pieces, and there be no one to deliver.23Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me,and prepares his way so that I will show God’s salvation to him.”

GospelMatthew 8:18-22

From the Gospel according to Matthew

18Now when Jesus saw great multitudes around him,he gave the order to depart to the other side.

19A scribe came and said to him,“Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20Jesus said to him,“The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

21Another of his disciples said to him,“Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”

22But Jesus said to him,“Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:3-11

Fratres: Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:3-11.

Brethren: All we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves to sin; for he who is dead is acquitted of sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ; for we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum

Marc 8:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 8:1-9

At that time, when there was a great crowd with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples together and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, for behold, they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and if I send them away to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from a distance. And His disciples answered Him, How will anyone be able to satisfy these with bread, here in a desert? And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. And He bade the crowd recline on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to distribute; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few little fishes; and He blessed them, and ordered them to be distributed. And they ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the fragments, seven baskets. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.

And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
