First Reading1 Kings 3:4-13

From the First Book of Kings

4The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place.Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.5In Gibeon, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night;and God said, “Ask for what I should give you.”

6Solomon said, “You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, because he walked before you in truth,in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you.You have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today.7Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father.I am just a little child.I don’t know how to go out or come in.8Your servant is among your people which you have chosen,a great people, that can’t be numbered or counted for multitude.9Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil;for who is able to judge this great people of yours?”

10This request pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.11God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, nor have you asked for riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice,12behold, I have done according to your word.Behold, I have given you a wise and understanding heart,so that there has been no one like you before you,and after you none will arise like you.13I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor,so that there will not be any among the kings like you for all your days.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 119:9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14

9How can a young man keep his way pure?By living according to your word.

10With my whole heart I have sought you.Don’t let me wander from your commandments.

11I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

12Blessed are you, Lord.Teach me your statutes.

13With my lips,I have declared all the ordinances of your mouth.

14I have rejoiced in the way of your testimonies,as much as in all riches.

GospelMark 6:30-34

From the Gospel according to Mark

30The apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus, and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught.31He said to them, “Come away into a deserted place, and rest awhile.”For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.32They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.33They saw them going, and many recognized himand ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to him.34Jesus came out, saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on thembecause they were like sheep without a shepherd;and he began to teach them many things.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corinthios

1 Cor 1:26-31

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 1:26-31

Brethren: Consider your own call, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble. But the foolish things of the world has God chosen to put to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world has God chosen to put to shame the strong, and the base things of the world and the despised has God chosen, and the things that are not, to bring to naught the things that are; lest any flesh should pride itself before Him. From Him you are in Christ Jesus, Who has become for us God-given wisdom, and justice, and sanctification, and redemption; so that, just as it is written, Let him who takes pride, take pride in the Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 19:3-12

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 19:3-12.

At that time, there came to Jesus some Pharisees, testing Him, and saying, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for any cause? But He answered and said to them, Have you not read that the Creator, from the beginning, made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? Therefore now they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder. They said to Him, Why then did Moses command to give a written notice of dismissal, and to put her away? He said to them, Because Moses, by reason of the hardness of your heart, permitted you to put away your wives; but it was not so from the beginning. And I say to you, that whoever puts away his wife, except for immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a woman who has been put away commits adultery. His disciples said to Him, If the case of a man with his wife is so, it is not expedient to marry. And He said, Not all can accept this teaching; but those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born so from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made so by men; and there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let him accept it who can.
