First ReadingGenesis 3:9-24*

From the Book of Genesis

9The Lord God called to the man,and said to him, “Where are you?”

10The man said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked;so I hid myself.”

11God said, “Who told you that you were naked?Have you eaten from the treethat I commanded you not to eat from?”

12The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me,she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13The Lord God said to the woman, “What have you done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your bellyand you shall eat dust all the days of your life.15I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

16To the woman he said,

“I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will bear children in pain.Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

17To Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and have eaten from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life.18It will yield thorns and thistles to you;and you will eat the herb of the field.19You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it.For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”

20The man called his wife Evebecause she would be the mother of all the living.21The Lord God made garments of animal skins for Adamand for his wife, and clothed them.

22The Lord God said,“Behold, the man has become like one of us,knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever— ”23Therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden,to till the ground from which he was taken.24So he drove out the man;and he placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way,to guard the way to the tree of life.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 90:2, 3-4, 5-6, 12-13*

2Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

3You turn man to destruction, saying,“Return, you children of men.”4For a thousand years in your sight are just like yesterday when it is past, like a watch in the night.

5You sweep them away as they sleep. In the morning they sprout like new grass.6In the morning it sprouts and springs up.By evening, it is withered and dry.

12So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.13Relent, Lord! How long?Have compassion on your servants!

GospelMark 8:1-10

From the Gospel according to Mark

1In those days, when there was a very great multitude, and they had nothing to eat,Jesus called his disciples to himself and said to them,2“I have compassion on the multitude, because they have stayed with me now three daysand have nothing to eat.3If I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way,for some of them have come a long way.”

4His disciples answered him,“From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?”

5He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”

They said, “Seven.”

6He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves.Having given thanks,he broke them and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude.7They also had a few small fish.Having blessed them, he said to serve these also.8They ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets of broken piecesthat were left over.9Those who had eaten were about four thousand. Then he sent them away.

10Immediately he entered into the boat with his disciplesand came into the region of Dalmanutha.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

2 Cor 10:17-18; 11:1-2

Fratres: Qui gloriátur, in Dómino gloriétur.

Lesson from the second letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

2 Cor 10:17-18; 11:1-2

Brothers: He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commendeth himself, is approved, but he, whom God commendeth. Would to God you could bear with some little of my folly: but do bear with me. For I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God. For I have espoused you to one husband that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 25:1-13

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc: Símile erit regnum coelórum decem virgínibus: quæ, accipiéntes lámpades suas, exiérunt óbviam sponso et sponsæ. At ille respóndens, ait: Amen, dico vobis, néscio vos. Vigiláte ítaque, quia nescítis diem neque horam.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 25:1-13.

At that time Jesus spoke this parable to His disciples: “Then will the kingdom of heaven be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom and the bride. Five of them were foolish and five wise. But the five foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, while the wise did take oil in their vessels with the lamps. Then as the bridegroom was long in coming, they all became drowsy and slept. And at midnight a cry arose, 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming, go forth to meet him!' Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' The wise answered, saying, 'Lest there may not be enough for us and for you, go rather to those who sell it, and buy some for yourselves.' Now while they were gone to buy it, the bridegroom came; and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Finally there came also the other virgins, who said, 'Sir, sir, open the door for us!' But he answered and said, 'Amen I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
