First ReadingDeuteronomy 6:2-6

From the Book of Deuteronomy

2that you might fear the Lord your God,to keep all his statutes and his commandments,which I command you—you, your son, and your son’s son,all the days of your life;and that your days may be prolonged.3Hear therefore, Israel,and observe to do it,that it may be well with you,and that you may increase mightily,as the Lord, the God of your fathers,has promised to you,in a land flowing with milk and honey.

4Hear, Israel:The Lord is our God.The Lord is one.5You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,with all your soul,and with all your might.6These words, which I command you today,shall be on your heart;

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51

2I love you, Lord, my strength.3The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer;

3my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.4I call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;and I am saved from my enemies.

47The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock.Exalted be the God of my salvation,

51He gives great deliverance to his king,and shows loving kindness to his anointed,to David and to his offspring, forever more.

Second ReadingHebrews 7:23-28

From the Letter to the Hebrews

23Many, indeed, have been made priests,because they are hindered from continuing by death.24But he, because he lives forever,has his priesthood unchangeable.25Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost thosewho draw near to God through him,seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.

26For such a high priest was fitting for us:holy, guiltless, undefiled,separated from sinners,and made higher than the heavens;27who doesn’t need, like those high priests,to offer up sacrifices daily,first for his own sins,and then for the sins of the people.For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.28For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness,but the word of the oath,which came after the law,appoints a Son forever who has been perfected.

GospelMark 12:28b-34

From the Gospel according to Mark

28One of the scribes cameand heard them questioning together,and knowing that he had answered them well,asked him, “Which commandment is the greatest of all?”

29Jesus answered, “The greatest is:‘Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.30You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,with all your soul,with all your mind,and with all your strength.’This is the first commandment.31The second is like this:‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no other commandment greater than these.”

32The scribe said to him,“Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one,and there is none other but he;33and to love him with all the heart,with all the understanding,all the soul, and with all the strength,and to love his neighbor as himself,is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34When Jesus saw that he answered wisely,he said to him, “You are not far from God’s Kingdom.”

No one dared ask him any question after that.
