First Reading2 Maccabees 6:18-31

From the Second Book of Maccabees

18Eleazar, one of the principal scribes,a man already well advanced in years, and of a noble countenance, was compelled to open his mouth to eat swine’s flesh.19But he, welcoming death with honor rather than life with defilement, advanced of his own accord to the instrument of torture, but first spat out the flesh,20as men ought to comewho are resolute to repel such things as not even for the natural love of life is it lawful to taste.

21But those who had the charge ofthat forbidden sacrificial feast took the man aside, for the acquaintance which of old times they had with him,and privately implored him to bring flesh of his own providing, such as was proper for him to use,and to make as if he did eat of the flesh from the sacrifice,as had been commanded by the king;22that by so doing he might be delivered from death, and so his ancient friendship with them might be treated kindly.23But he, having formed a high resolve, and one that became his years, the dignity of old age,and the gray hairs which he had reached with honor, and his excellent education from a child,or rather the holy laws of God’s ordaining, declared his mind accordingly, bidding them to quickly send him to Hades.

24“For it doesn’t become our years to dissemble,”he said, “that many of the young should suppose that Eleazar, the man of ninety years, had gone over to an alien religion;25and so they, by reason of my deception, and for the sake of this brief and momentary life, would be led astray because of me,and I defile and disgrace myself in my old age.26For even if for the present time I would remove from me the punishment of men,yet whether I live or die,I wouldn’t escape the hands of the Almighty.27Therefore, by bravely parting with my life now,I will show myself worthy of my old age,28and leave behind a noble example to the young to die willinglyand nobly a glorious death for the revered and holy laws.”

When he had said these words,he went immediately to the instrument of torture.29When they changed the good will they bore toward him a little before into ill willbecause these words of his were,as they thought, sheer madness,30and when he was at the point to die with the blows,he groaned aloud and said,“To the Lord, who has the holy knowledge,it is manifest that, while I might have been delivered from death,I endure severe pains in my body by being scourged;but in soul I gladly suffer these thingsbecause of my fear of him.”

31So this man also died like this, leaving his death for an example of noblenessand a memorial of virtue, not only to the youngbut also to the great body of his nation.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 3:2-3, 4-5, 6-7

2Lord, how my adversaries have increased! Many are those who rise up against me.3Many there are who say of my soul,“There is no help for him in God.”

4But you, Lord, are a shield around me,my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.5I cry to the Lord with my voice, and he answers me out of his holy hill.

6I laid myself down and slept.I awakened, for the Lord sustains me.7I will not be afraid of tens of thousands of peoplewho have set themselves against me on every side.

GospelLuke 19:1-10

From the Gospel according to Luke

1He entered and was passing through Jericho.2There was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.3He was trying to see who Jesus was,and couldn’t because of the crowd, because he was short.4He ran on aheadand climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him,for he was going to pass that way.5When Jesus came to the place,he looked up and saw him,and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”6He hurried, came down, and received him joyfully.7When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner.”

8Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,“Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor.If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone,I restore four times as much.”

9Jesus said to him,“Today, salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham.10For the Son of Man came to seekand to save that which was lost.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

1 Cor 4:9-14

Lesson from the first letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 4:9-14

Brethren: We have been made a spectacle to the world, and to angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are without honor! To this very hour we hunger and thirst, and we are naked and buffeted, and have no fixed abode. And we toil, working with our own hands. We are reviled and we bless, we are persecuted and we bear with it, we are maligned and we entreat, we have become as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all, even until now! I write these things not to put you to shame, but to admonish you as my dearest children, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:32-34

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: Nolíte timére, pusíllus grex, quia complácuit Patri vestro dare vobis regnum.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:32-34

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Do not be afraid, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have and give alms. Make for yourselves purses that do not grow old, a treasure unfailing in heaven, where neither thief draws near nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
