First ReadingIsaiah 42:1-7

From the Book of Isaiah

1“Behold, my servant, whom I uphold,my chosen, in whom my soul delights:I have put my Spirit on him.He will bring justice to the nations.2He will not shout, nor raise his voice, nor cause it to be heard in the street.3He won’t break a bruised reed.He won’t quench a dimly burning wick.He will faithfully bring justice.4He will not fail nor be discouraged, until he has set justice on the earth, and the islands wait for his law.”5God the Lord,he who created the heavens and stretched them out,he who spread out the earth and that which comes out of it,he who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk in it, says:6“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness.I will hold your hand.I will keep you,and make you a covenant for the people,as a light for the nations,7to open the blind eyes,to bring the prisoners out of the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 27:1, 2, 3, 13-14

1The Lord is my light and my salvation.Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life.Of whom shall I be afraid?

2When evildoers came at me to eat up my flesh, even my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell.

3Though an army should encamp against me,my heart shall not fear.Though war should rise against me,even then I will be confident.

13I am still confident of this:I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.14Wait for the Lord.Be strong, and let your heart take courage.Yes, wait for the Lord.

GospelJohn 12:1-11

From the Gospel according to John

1Then, six days before the Passover,Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was,who had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.2So they made him a supper there.Martha served, but Lazarus was one of thosewho sat at the table with him.3Therefore Mary took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed Jesus’ feetand wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

4Then Judas Iscariot,Simon’s son, one of his disciples, who would betray him, said,5“Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denariiand given to the poor?”6Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, used to steal what was put into it.

7But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept this for the day of my burial.8For you always have the poor with you,but you don’t always have me.”

9A large crowd therefore of the Jews learned that he was there;and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.10But the chief priests conspired to put Lazarus to death also,11because on account of him many of the Jews went awayand believed in Jesus.

Léctio Isaíæ Prophétæ

Isa 50:5-10

Accédat ad me.

Lesson from the Book of Isaias, the Prophet

Isa 50:5-10

The Lord God hath opened my ear, and I do not resist: I have not gone back. I have given my body to the strikers, and my cheeks to them that plucked them: I have not turned away my face from them that rebuked me, and spit upon me. The Lord God is my helper, therefore am I not confounded: therefore have I set my face as a most hard rock, and I know that I shall not be confounded. He is near that justifieth me, who will contend with me? let us stand together, who is my adversary? let him come near to me. Behold the Lord God is my helper: who is he that shall condemn me? Lo, they shall all be destroyed as a garment, the moth shall eat them up. Who is there among you that feareth the Lord, that heareth the voice of his servant, that hath walked in darkness, and hath no light? let him hope in the name of the Lord, and lean upon his God.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem.

Joann 12:1-9

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 12:1-9

Jesus therefore, six days before the pasch, came to Bethania, where Lazarus had been dead, whom Jesus raised to life. And they made him a supper there: and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that were at table with him. Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of right spikenard, of great price, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, he that was about to betray him, said: Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the purse, carried the things that were put therein. Jesus therefore said: Let her alone, that she may keep it against the day of my burial. For the poor you have always with you; but me you have not always. A great multitude therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

Holy Cross

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who didst establish the salvation of mankind on the tree of the Cross; that whence death came, thence also life might arise again, and that he, who overcame by the tree, by the tree also might be overcome: Through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
