First ReadingSirach 15:15-20

From the Book of Sirach

15If you choose, you can keep the commandments. To be faithful is a matter of your choice.16He has set fire and water before you.You will stretch forth your hand to whichever you desire.17Before man is life and death.Whichever he likes, it will be given to him.18For the wisdom of the Lord is great. He is mighty in power, and sees all things.19His eyes are upon those who fear him.He knows every act of man.20He has not commanded any man to be ungodly. He has not given any man license to sin.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34

1Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the Lord’s law.2Blessed are those who keep his statutes, who seek him with their whole heart.

4You have commanded your precepts, that we should fully obey them.5Oh that my ways were steadfastto obey your statutes!

17Do good to your servant.I will live and I will obey your word.18Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things out of your law.

33Teach me, Lord, the way of your statutes.I will keep them to the end.34Give me understanding, and I will keep your law.Yes, I will obey it with my whole heart.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 2:6-10

From the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

6We speak wisdom, however, among those who are full grown, yet a wisdom not of this world nor of the rulers of this worldwho are coming to nothing.7But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds for our glory,8which none of the rulers of this world has known. For had they known it,they wouldn’t have crucified the Lord of glory.9But as it is written,

“Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these God has prepared for those who love him.”

10But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

GospelMatthew 5:17-37

From the Gospel according to Matthew

or Matthew 5:20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a, 37

17“Don’t thinkthat I came to destroy the law or the prophets.I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill.18For most certainly,I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.19Therefore, whoever shall break one of these least commandmentsand teach others to do so,shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven;but whoever shall doand teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.20For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceedsthat of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21“You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones,‘You shall not murder;’and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’22But I tell you that everyonewho is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment.Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’will be in danger of the council.Whoever says, ‘You fool!’will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.

23“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there rememberthat your brother has anything against you,24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.25Agree with your adversary quicklywhile you are with him on the way;lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.26Most certainly I tell you,you shall by no means get out of there until you have paid the last penny.

27“You have heard that it was said,‘You shall not commit adultery;’28but I tell you that everyonewho gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.29If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you.For it is more profitable for youthat one of your members should perish than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.30If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you.For it is more profitable for youthat one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.

31“It was also said,‘Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,’32but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress;and whoever marries herwhen she is put away commits adultery.

33“Again you have heardthat it was said to the ancient ones,‘You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,’34but I tell you, don’t swear at all:neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;35nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet;nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.36Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can’t make one hair white or black.37But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Thessalonicénses

1 Thess 1:2-10

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians

1 Thess. 1:2-10

Brethren: We give thanks to God always for you all, continually making a remembrance of you in our prayers; being mindful before God our Father of your work of faith, and labor, and charity, and your enduring hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. We know, brethren, beloved of God, how you were chosen. For our Gospel was not delivered to you in word only, but in power also, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much fullness, as indeed you know what manner of men we have been among you for your sakes. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great tribulation, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became a pattern to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For from you the word of the Lord has been spread abroad, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we need say nothing further. For they themselves report concerning us how we entered among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to await from heaven Jesus, His Son, Whom He raised from the dead, Who has delivered us from the wrath to come.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.

Matt 13:31-35

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew

Matt 13:31-35

At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to the crowds: The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. This indeed is the smallest of all the seeds; but when it grows up it is larger than any herb and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and dwell in its branches. He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and buried in three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened. All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without parables he did not speak to them; that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, I will open My mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
