Weekday · Ordinary Time · Weekday Year II · Psalter Week 2

First ReadingEphesians 6:1-9*

From the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.2“Honor your father and mother,”which is the first commandment with a promise:3“that it may be well with you,and you may live long on the earth.”

4You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the disciplineand instruction of the Lord.

5Servants, be obedient to thosewho according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling,in singleness of your heart, as to Christ,6not in the way of service only when eyes are on you,as men pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,7with good will doing service as to the Lord and not to men,8knowing that whatever good thing each one does,he will receive the same good again from the Lord, whether he is bound or free.

9You masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that he who is both their Masterand yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 145:10-11, 12-13ab, 13cd-14*

10All your works will give thanks to you, Lord.Your saints will extol you.11They will speak of the glory of your kingdom, and talk about your power,

12to make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, the glory of the majesty of his kingdom.13Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.Your dominion endures throughout all generations.

13The Lord is faithful in all his words, and loving in all his deeds.14The Lord upholds all who fall, and raises up all those who are bowed down.

GospelLuke 13:22-30

From the Gospel according to Luke

22He went on his way through cities and villages, teaching, and traveling on to Jerusalem.23One said to him, “Lord, are they few who are saved?”

He said to them,24“Strive to enter in by the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter in and will not be able.25When once the master of the house has risen upand has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’then he will answer and tell you,‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’26Then you will begin to say,‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’27He will say, ‘I tell you,I don’t know where you come from.Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.’28There will be weeping and gnashing of teethwhen you see Abraham,Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in God’s Kingdom, and yourselves being thrown outside.29They will come from the east, west, north, and south, and will sit down in God’s Kingdom.30Behold, there are some who are last who will be first, and there are some who are first who will be last.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 4:23-28

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 4:23-28

Brethren: Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, which has been created according to God in justice and holiness of truth. Wherefore, put away lying and speak truth each one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down upon your anger; do not give place to the devil. He who was wont to steal, let him steal no longer; but rather let him labor, working with his hands at what is good, that he may have something to share with him who suffers need.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 22:1-14

At ille obmútuit. Tunc dixit rex minístris: Ligátis mánibus et pédibus ejus, míttite eum in ténebras exterióres: ibi erit fletus et stridor déntium. Multi enim sunt vocáti, pauci vero elécti.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 22:1-14

At that time, Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a king who made a marriage feast for his son. And he sent his servants to call in those invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come. Again he sent out other servants, saying, “Tell those who are invited, behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatlings are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.” But they made light of it, and went off, one to his farm, and another to his business; and the rest laid hold of his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. But when the king heard of it, he was angry; and he sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city. Then he said to his servants, “The marriage feast indeed is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy; go therefore to the crossroads, and invite to the marriage feast whomever you shall find.” And his servants went out into the roads, and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; and the marriage feast was filled with guests. Now the king went in to see the guests, and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment. And he said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” But he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind his hands and feet and cast him forth into the darkness outside, where there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.
