Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Solemnity · Ordinary Time · Sunday Cycle C · Psalter Week 2

First Reading2 Samuel 5:1-3

From the Second Book of Samuel

1Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.2In times past, when Saul was king over us,it was you who led Israel out and in.The Lord said to you,‘You will be shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be prince over Israel.’”3So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord;and they anointed David king over Israel.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5

1I was glad when they said to me,“Let’s go to the Lord’s house!”2Our feet are standing within your gates, Jerusalem!

3Jerusalem is built as a city that is compact together,4where the tribes go up, even the Lord’s tribes,

4according to an ordinance for Israel,to give thanks to the Lord’s name.5For there are set thrones for judgment, the thrones of David’s house.

Second ReadingColossians 1:12-20

From the Letter of Paul to the Colossians

12giving thanks to the Father, who made us fit to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light,13who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the Kingdom of the Son of his love,14in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins.

15He is the image of the invisible God,the firstborn of all creation.16For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him.17He is before all things, and in him all things are held together.18He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence.19For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him,20and through him to reconcile all things to himself by him, whether things on the earth or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross.

GospelLuke 23:35-43

From the Gospel according to Luke

35The people stood watching. The rulers with them also scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others.Let him save himself,if this is the Christ of God, his chosen one!”

36The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar,37and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”

38An inscription was also written over him in letters of Greek,Latin, and Hebrew:“THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!”

40But the other answered, and rebuking him said,“Don’t you even fear God,seeing you are under the same condemnation?41And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.”42He said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

43Jesus said to him,“Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
