First ReadingActs 2:14, 22-33

From the Acts of the Apostles

14But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke out to them,“You men of Judea and all you who dwell at Jerusalem, let this be known to you,and listen to my words.

verses 15–21 are not read22“Men of Israel, hear these words!Jesus of Nazareth,a man approved by God to you by mighty worksand wonders and signs which God did by him among you, even as you yourselves know,23him, being delivered up by the determined counseland foreknowledge of God,you have taken by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed;24whom God raised up,having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it.25For David says concerning him,

‘I saw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved.26Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope,27because you will not leave my soul in Hades, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay.28You made known to me the ways of life. You will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

29“Brothers, I may tell you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.30Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to himthat of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh,he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,31he foreseeing this, spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul wasn’t left in Hades, and his flesh didn’t see decay.32This Jesus God raised up, to which we all are witnesses.33Being therefore exalted by the right hand of God,and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit,he has poured out this which you now see and hear.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11

1Preserve me, God, for I take refuge in you.2My soul, you have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord.Apart from you I have no good thing.”

5The Lord assigned my portion and my cup.You made my lot secure.

7I will bless the Lord, who has given me counsel.Yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.8I have set the Lord always before me.Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices. My body shall also dwell in safety.10For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption.

11You will show me the path of life.In your presence is fullness of joy.In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

Second Reading1 Peter 1:17-21

From the First Letter of Peter

17If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man’s work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear,18knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things like silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,19but with precious blood,as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ,20who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last age for your sake,21who through him are believers in God,who raised him from the dead and gave him glory,so that your faith and hope might be in God.

GospelLuke 24:13-35

From the Gospel according to Luke

13Behold, two of them were goingthat very day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem.14They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.15While they talked and questioned together,Jesus himself came near, and went with them.16But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.17He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”

18One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalemwho doesn’t know the thingswhich have happened there in these days?”

19He said to them, “What things?”

They said to him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deedand word before God and all the people;20and how the chief priestsand our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.21But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel.Yes, and besides all this,it is now the third day since these things happened.22Also, certain women of our company amazed us,having arrived early at the tomb;23and when they didn’t find his body, they came sayingthat they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.24Some of us went to the tomband found it just like the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”

25He said to them, “Foolish people, and slow of heart to believe in allthat the prophets have spoken!26Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these thingsand to enter into his glory?”27Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets,he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28They came near to the village where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.

29They urged him, saying,“Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over.”

He went in to stay with them.30When he had sat down at the table with them,he took the bread and gave thanks.Breaking it, he gave it to them.31Their eyes were opened and they recognized him;then he vanished out of their sight.32They said to one another,“Weren’t our hearts burning within uswhile he spoke to us along the way,and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”33They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,34saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”35They related the things that happened along the way,and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul to the Colossians

Col. 3:14-15, 17, 23-24

Brethren: Have charity, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ rejoice in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him. Whatsoever you do, do it from the heart, as to the Lord, and not to men: knowing that you shall receive of the Lord the reward of inheritance. Serve ye the Lord Christ.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 13:54-58

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 13:54-58

At that time: Jesus coming into His country, He taught them in their synagogues, so that they wondered and said: How came this Man by this wisdom and miracles? Is not this the carpenter's Son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Jude: and His sisters, are they not all with us? Whence therefore hath He all these things? And they were scandalized in His regard. But Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. And He wrought not many miracles there, because of their unbelief.

St. Joseph

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: and that we should magnify with due praises, bless and proclaim Thee on the solemnity of blessed Joseph; who, being a just man, was given by Thee as a Spouse to the Virgin Mother of God, and, as a faithful and prudent servant was set over Thy Family, that, with fatherly care, he might guard Thine only-begotten Son, conceived by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, and the Powers stand in awe. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say with lowly praise:
