First ReadingNumbers 11:4b-15

From the Book of Numbers

4The mixed multitudethat was among them lusted exceedingly;and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?5We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt for nothing;the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic;6but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna to look at.”7The manna was like coriander seed, and it looked like bdellium.8The people went around, gathered it, and ground it in mills,or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it.Its taste was like the taste of fresh oil.9When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it.

10Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent;and the Lord’s anger burned greatly;and Moses was displeased.11Moses said to the Lord,“Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why haven’t I found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?12Have I conceived all this people?Have I brought them out, that you should tell me,‘Carry them in your bosom,as a nurse carries a nursing infant,to the land which you swore to their fathers’?13Where could I get meat to give all these people? For they weep before me,saying, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’14I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.15If you treat me this way, please kill me right now,if I have found favor in your sight;and don’t let me see my wretchedness.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 81:12-13, 14-15, 16-17

12But my people didn’t listen to my voice.Israel desired none of me.13So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels.

14Oh that my people would listen to me,that Israel would walk in my ways!15I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their adversaries.

16The haters of the Lord would cringe before him,and their punishment would last forever.17But he would have also fed them with the finest of the wheat.I will satisfy you with honey out of the rock.”

GospelMatthew 14:22-36

From the Gospel according to Matthew

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boatand go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.23After he had sent the multitudes away,he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.25In the fourth watch of the night,Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!”and they cried out for fear.27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up!It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

28Peter answered him and said,“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”

29He said, “Come!”

Peter stepped down from the boatand walked on the waters to come to Jesus.30But when he saw that the wind was strong,he was afraid, and beginning to sink,he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him,“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.33Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”

34When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.35When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding regionand brought to him all who were sick;36and they begged himthat they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.

And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
