First ReadingWisdom 13:1-9

From the Book of Wisdom

1For truly all men who had no perception of God were foolish by nature, and didn’t gain power to know him who exists from the good things that are seen. They didn’t recognize the architect from his works.2But they thought that either fire, or wind, or swift air,or circling stars, or raging water, or luminaries of heavenwere gods that rule the world.3If it was through delight in their beauty that they took them to be gods, let them know how much better their Sovereign Lord is than these, for the first author of beauty created them.4But if it was through astonishment at their power and influence, then let them understand from them how much more powerful he who formed them is.5For from the greatness of the beauty of created things, mankind forms the corresponding perception of their Maker.6But yet for these men there is but small blame, for they too perhaps go astraywhile they are seeking God and desiring to find him.7For they diligently search while living among his works, and they trust their sight that the things that they look at are beautiful.8But again even they are not to be excused.9For if they had power to know so much, that they should be able to explore the world, how is it that they didn’t find the Sovereign Lord sooner?

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 19:2-3, 4-5ab

2The heavens declare the glory of God.The expanse shows his handiwork.3Day after day they pour out speech, and night after night they display knowledge.

4There is no speech nor languagewhere their voice is not heard.5Their voice has gone out through all the earth, their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,

GospelLuke 17:26-37

From the Gospel according to Luke

26As it was in the days of Noah, even so it will also be in the days of the Son of Man.27They ate, they drank, they married, and they were given in marriage until the daythat Noah entered into the ship, and the flood came and destroyed them all.28Likewise, even as it was in the days of Lot:they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built;29but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom,it rained fire and sulfur from the skyand destroyed them all.30It will be the same way in the daythat the Son of Man is revealed.31In that day, he who will be on the housetopand his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away.Let him who is in the field likewise not turn back.32Remember Lot’s wife!33Whoever seeks to save his life loses it,but whoever loses his life preserves it.34I tell you, inthat night there will be two people in one bed.One will be taken and the other will be left.35There will be two grinding grain together. One will be taken and the other will be left.”

37They, answering, asked him, “Where, Lord?”

He said to them, “Where the body is,there the vultures will also be gathered together.”

Ecce sacérdos magnus, qui in diébus suis plácuit Deo, et invéntus est justus: et in témpore iracúndiæ factus est reconciliátio. Non est invéntus símilis illi, qui conservávit legem Excélsi. Ideo jurejurándo fecit illum Dóminus créscere in plebem suam. Benedictiónem ómnium géntium dedit illi, et testaméntum suum confirmávit super caput ejus. Agnóvit eum in benedictiónibus suis: conservávit illi misericórdiam suam: et invénit grátiam coram óculis Dómini. Magnificávit eum in conspéctu regum: et dedit illi corónam glóriæ. Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 44:16-27; 45:3-20

Behold, a great priest, who in his days pleased God, and was found just; and in the time of wrath he was made a reconciliation. There was not found the like to him, who kept the law of the Most High. Therefore, by an oath, the Lord made him to increase among his people. He gave him the blessing of all nations, and confirmed His covenant upon his head. He acknowledged him in His blessings; He preserved for him His mercy; and he found grace before the eyes of the Lord. He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him a crown of glory. He made an everlasting covenant with him, and gave him a great priesthood; and made him blessed in glory. To execute the office of the priesthood, and to have praise in His name, and to offer Him a worthy incense for an odor of sweetness.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 11:33-36

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 11:33-36

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, No one lights a lamp and puts it in a cellar or even under the measure, but upon the lamp-stand, that they who enter in may see the light. The lamp of your body is your eye. If your eye be sound, your whole body will be full of light. But if it be evil, your body also will be full of darkness. Take care, therefore, that the light that is in you is not darkness. If, then, your whole body is full of light, having no part in darkness, it will all be illumined, as when a bright lamp illumines you.

Common

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
