Optional memorial: Saint Christopher Magallanes, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs

First ReadingActs 19:1-8

From the Acts of the Apostles

1While Apollos was at Corinth,Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples.2He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

They said to him, “No,we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3He said, “Into what then were you baptized?”

They said, “Into John’s baptism.”

4Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the onewho would come after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.”

5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.6When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on themand they spoke with other languages and prophesied.7They were about twelve men in all.

8He entered into the synagogueand spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 68:2-3ab, 4-5acd, 6-7ab

2Let God arise!Let his enemies be scattered!Let them who hate him also flee before him.3As smoke is driven away,so drive them away.As wax melts before the fire,so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

4But let the righteous be glad.Let them rejoice before God.Yes, let them rejoice with gladness.5Sing to God! Sing praises to his name!Extol him who rides on the clouds:to the Lord, his name!Rejoice before him!

6A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows,is God in his holy habitation.7God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

GospelJohn 16:29-33

From the Gospel according to John

29His disciples said to him,“Behold, now you are speaking plainly, and using no figures of speech.30Now we know that you know all things, and don’t need for anyone to question you.By this we believe that you came from God.”

31Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?32Behold, the time is coming, yes, and has now come, that you will be scattered, everyone to his own place, and you will leave me alone.Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.33I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble;but cheer up!I have overcome the world.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Petri Apóstoli

1 Pet 4:7-11

Caríssimi: Estóte prudéntes et vigiláte in oratiónibus. Ante ómnia autem mútuam in vobismetípsis caritátem contínuam habéntes: quia cáritas óperit multitúdinem peccatórum. Hospitáles ínvicem sine murmuratióne: unusquísque, sicut accépit grátiam, in altérutrum illam administrántes, sicut boni dispensatóres multifórmis grátiæ Dei. Si quis lóquitur, quasi sermónes Dei: si quis minístrat, tamquam ex virtúte, quam adminístrat Deus: ut in ómnibus honorificétur Deus per Jesum Christum, Dóminum nostrum.

Lesson from the first letter of St. Peter the Apostle

1 Pet 4:7-11.

Beloved: Be prudent and watchful in prayers. But above all things have a constant mutual charity among yourselves: for charity covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without murmuring. According to the gift that each has received, minister it to one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let it be as with words of God. If anyone ministers, let it be as from the strength that God furnishes; that in all things God may be honored through Jesus Christ our Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joannes 15:26-27; 16:1-4

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 15:26-27; 16:1-4.

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: When the Advocate has come, Whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth Who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness concerning Me. And you also will bear witness, because from the beginning you are with Me. These things I have spoken to you that you may not be scandalized. They will expel you from the synagogues. Yes, the hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think he is offering worship to God. And these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have spoken to you, that when the time for them has come you may remember that I told you.

PrefacePrefatio

Ascension

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who, after His Resurrection, appeared openly to all His disciples, and, while they looked on, was taken up into heaven, that He might grant unto us to be sharers in His own divinity. And therefore, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:

John 17:12-13; 17:15

Father, while I was with them, I kept them whom You have given Me, alleluia; but now I am coming to You; I do not pray that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from evil, alleluia, alleluia.
