First ReadingGenesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7

From the Book of Genesis

7The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;and man became a living soul.8The Lord God planted a garden eastward,in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.9Out of the ground the Lord God made every tree to growthat is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the gardenand the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

some verses are not read1Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the fieldwhich the Lord God had made.He said to the woman,“Has God really said,‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?”

2The woman said to the serpent,“We may eat fruit from the trees of the garden,3but not the fruit of the treewhich is in the middle of the garden.God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it.You shall not touch it, lest you die.’”

4The serpent said to the woman, “You won’t really die,5for God knows that in the day you eat it,your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,knowing good and evil.”

6When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit, and ate. Then she gave some to her husband with her,and he ate it, too.7Their eyes were opened, and they both knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together, and made coverings for themselves.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 51:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 17

3Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness.According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.4Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity.Cleanse me from my sin.

5For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.6Against you, and you only, I have sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight,so you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.

12Create in me a clean heart, O God.Renew a right spirit within me.13Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.

17Lord, open my lips.My mouth will declare your praise.

Second ReadingRomans 5:12-19

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

or Romans 5:12, 17-19

12Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man,and death through sin,so death passed to all men because all sinned.13For until the law, sin was in the world;but sin is not charged when there is no law.14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.

15But the free gift isn’t like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of Godand the gift by the grace of the one man,Jesus Christ, abound to the many.16The gift is not as through one who sinned;for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift followed many trespasses to justification.17For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one;so much more will those who receive the abundance of graceand of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ.

18So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned;even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life.19For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.

GospelMatthew 4:1-11

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.2When he had fasted forty days and forty nights,he was hungry afterward.3The tempter came and said to him,“If you are the Son of God,command that these stones become bread.”

4But he answered, “It is written,‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’”

5Then the devil took him into the holy city.He set him on the pinnacle of the temple,6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God,throw yourself down, for it is written,

‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and,‘On their hands they will bear you up,so that you don’t dash your foot against a stone.’”

7Jesus said to him,“Again, it is written,‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”

8Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.9He said to him, “I will give you all of these things,if you will fall down and worship me.”

10Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written,‘You shall worship the Lord your God,and you shall serve him only.’”

11Then the devil left him,and behold, angels came and served him.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

2 Cor 6:1-10.

Fratres: Exhortámur vos, ne in vácuum grátiam Dei recipiátis.

A reading from the Second Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians

2 Cor. 6:1-10

Brethren: We entreat you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says, In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation! We give no offense to anyone, that our ministry may not be blamed. On the contrary, let us conduct ourselves in all circumstances as God’s ministers, in much patience; in tribulations, in hardships, in distresses; in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults; in labors, in sleepless nights, in fastings; in innocence, in knowledge, in long-sufferings; in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in unaffected love; in the word of truth, in the power of God; with the armor of justice on the right hand and on the left; in honor and dishonor, in evil report and good report; as deceivers and yet truthful, as unknown and yet well known, as dying, and behold, we live, as chastised but not killed, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet enriching many, as having nothing yet possessing all things.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 4:1-11

In illo témpore: Ductus est Jesus in desértum a Spíritu, ut tentarétur a diábolo.

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 4:1-11

At that time, Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit, to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread. But He answered and said, It is written, ‘Not by bread alone does man live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’ Then the devil took Him into the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He has given His angels charge concerning You; and upon their hands they shall bear You up, lest You dash Your foot against a stone.’ Jesus said to him, It is written further, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them. And he said to Him, All these things will I give You, if You will fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan, for it is written, ‘The Lord your God shall you worship and Him only shall you serve.’ Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Lent

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
