First ReadingJonah 3:1-10

From the Book of Jonah

1The Lord’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying,2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”

3So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the Lord’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across.4Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said,“In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”

5The people of Nineveh believed God;and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least.6The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.7He made a proclamationand published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything;let them not feed, nor drink water;8but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God.Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil wayand from the violence that is in his hands.9Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger,so that we might not perish?”

10God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way.God relented of the disasterwhich he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 130:1b-2, 3-4ab, 7-8

1Out of the depths I have cried to you, Lord.2Lord, hear my voice.Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my petitions.

3If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,Lord, who could stand?4But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared.

7Israel, hope in the Lord, for there is loving kindness with the Lord.Abundant redemption is with him.8He will redeem Israel from all their sins.

GospelLuke 10:38-42

From the Gospel according to Luke

38As they went on their way,he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.39She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard his word.40But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him,and said, “Lord, don’t you carethat my sister left me to serve alone?Ask her therefore to help me.”

41Jesus answered her,“Martha, Martha, you are anxiousand troubled about many things,42but one thing is needed.Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Léctio libri Sapiéntiæ

Eccli 45:1-6

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Ecclus 45:1-6

Beloved of God and men, whose memory is held in benediction. He made him like the Saints in glory, and magnified him in the fear of his enemies, and with his words He made prodigies to cease. He glorified him in the sight of kings, and gave him Commandments in the sight of his people, and revealed to him His glory. He sanctified him in his faith and meekness, and chose him out of all flesh. For He heard him and his voice, and brought him into a cloud. And, face to face, He gave him the Commandments, the law of life and understanding.

At that time, Peter said to Jesus, Behold, we have left all and followed You; what then shall we have? And Jesus said to them, Amen I say to you that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man shall sit on the throne of His glory, shall also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
