First ReadingPhilippians 3:8-14

From the Letter of Paul to the Philippians

8Yes most certainly, and I count all things to be a loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus,my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and count them nothing but refuse, that I may gain Christ9and be found in him,not having a righteousness of my own, that which is of the law,but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith,10that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death,11if by any means I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.12Not that I have already obtained,or am already made perfect;but I press on, that I may take hold of that forwhich also I was taken hold of by Christ Jesus.

13Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do:forgetting the things which are behindand stretching forward to the things which are before,14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6

1Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers;2but his delight is in the Lord’s law.On his law he meditates day and night.

3He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither.Whatever he does shall prosper.

4The wicked are not so,but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.6For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.

Second ReadingRomans 12:3-13

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

3For I say through the grace that was given me,to everyone who is among you,not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think;but to think reasonably,as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.4For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function,5so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another,6having gifts differing according to the gracethat was given to us:if prophecy, let’s prophesy according to the proportion of our faith;7or service, let’s give ourselves to service;or he who teaches, to his teaching;8or he who exhorts, to his exhorting;he who gives, let him do it with generosity;he who rules, with diligence;he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

9Let love be without hypocrisy.Abhor that which is evil.Cling to that which is good.10In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another;in honor prefer one another,11not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord,12rejoicing in hope, enduring in troubles, continuing steadfastly in prayer,13contributing to the needs of the saints, and given to hospitality.

GospelMatthew 5:13-16

From the Gospel according to Matthew

13“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.

14“You are the light of the world.A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.15Neither do you light a lampand put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand;and it shines to all who are in the house.16Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good worksand glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Léctio Ezechiélis Prophétæ

Ezech 34:11-16

Lesson from the Prophecy of Ezechiel

Ezech 34:11-16

Thus says the Lord God: I Myself will look after and tend My sheep. As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend My sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I will lead them out from among the peoples and gather them from the foreign lands; I will bring them back to their own country and pasture them upon the mountains of Israel in the land’s ravines and all its inhabited places. In good pastures will I pasture them, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing ground. There they shall lie down on good grazing ground, and in rich pastures shall they be pastured on the mountains of Israel. I Myself will pasture My sheep; I Myself will give them rest, says the Lord God. The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will preserve, shepherding them rightly, says the Lord almighty.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secundum Matthǽum

Matt 25:31-46

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: Cum vénerit Fílius hóminis in majestáte sua, et omnes Angeli cum eo, tunc sedébit super sedem majestátis suæ: et congregabúntur ante eum omnes gentes, et separábit eos ab ínvicem, sicut pastor ségregat oves ab hædis: et státuet oves quidem a dextris suis, hædos autem a sinístris. Tunc dicet Rex his, qui a dextris ejus erunt: Veníte, benedícti Patris mei, possidéte parátum vobis regnum a constitutióne mundi.

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 25:31-46

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: When the Son of Man shall come in His majesty, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory; and before Him will be gathered all the nations, and He will separate them one from another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the king will say to those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave Me to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; naked and you covered Me; sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ Then the just will answer Him, saying; ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You; or thirsty, and give you to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and take You in; or naked, and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And, answering, the king will say to them, ‘Amen I say to you, as long as you did it for one of these, the least of My brethren, you did it for Me.’ Then He will say to those on His left hand, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry, and you did not give Me to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ Then they also will and say, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Amen I say to you, as long as you did not do it for one of these least ones, you did not do it for Me.’ And these will go into everlasting punishment, but the just into everlasting life.

Lent

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
