First Reading1 Maccabees 4:36-37, 52-59

From the First Book of Maccabees

36But Judas and his kindred said,“Behold, our enemies are defeated.Let’s go up to cleanse the holy placeand to rededicate it.”37All the army was gathered together, and they went up to mount Zion.

verses 38–51 are not read52They rose up early in the morning,on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, which is the month Chislev,in the one hundred forty eighth year,53and offered sacrifice according to the law on the new altar of burnt offeringswhich they had made.54At the time and day the Gentiles had profaned it,even then it was dedicated with songs, harps, lutes, and with cymbals.55All the people fell on their faces, worshiped, and gave praise toward heaven, which had given them good success.56They celebrated the dedication of the altar eight days, and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed a sacrifice of deliverance and praise.57They decorated the front of the temple with crowns of gold and small shields. They dedicated the gates and the priests’ chambers, and made doors for them.58There was exceedingly great gladness among the people, and the reproach of the Gentiles was turned away.

59Judas and his kindredand the whole congregation of Israel ordainedthat the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their seasons from year to year for eight days, from the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev, with gladness and joy.

Responsorial Psalm1 Chronicles 29:10bcd, 11abc, 11d-12a, 12bcd

From the First Book of Chronicles

10Therefore David blessed the Lord before all the assembly;and David said, “You are blessed,Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever.

11Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty! For all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours.

11Yours is the kingdom,Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.12Both riches and honor come from you,and you rule over all!

12In your hand is power and might! It is in your hand to make great, and to give strength to all!

GospelLuke 19:45-48

From the Gospel according to Luke

45He entered into the temple and began to drive out thosewho bought and sold in it,46saying to them, “It is written,‘My house is a house of prayer,’but you have made it a ‘den of robbers’!”

47He was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests, the scribes, and the leading men among the people sought to destroy him.48They couldn’t find what they might do,for all the people hung on to every word that he said.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Timótheum

2 Tim 4:1-8

Lesson from the second letter of St Paul the Apostle to Timothy

2 Tim 4:1-8

Dearly beloved: I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 5:13-19

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: Vos estis sal terræ.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 5:13-19

In that time Jesus said to His disciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
