First ReadingJob 3:1-4a, 11-17, 20-23*

From the Book of Job

1After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.2Job answered:

3“Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, ‘There is a boy conceived.’4Let that day be darkness.Don’t let God from above seek for it,neither let the light shine on it. verses 5–10 are not read11“Why didn’t I die from the womb? Why didn’t I give up the spirit when my mother bore me?12Why did the knees receive me?Or why the breast, that I should nurse?13For now I should have lain down and been quiet.I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;15or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver;16or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been,as infants who never saw light.17There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest. verses 18–19 are not read20“Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul,21who long for death, but it doesn’t come;and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,22who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?23Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 88:2-3, 4-5, 6, 7-8*

2Lord, the God of my salvation,I have cried day and night before you.3Let my prayer enter into your presence.Turn your ear to my cry.

4For my soul is full of troubles. My life draws near to Sheol.5I am counted among those who go down into the pit.I am like a man who has no help,

6set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand.

7You have laid me in the lowest pit,in the darkest depths.8Your wrath lies heavily on me.You have afflicted me with all your waves.

GospelLuke 9:51-56

From the Gospel according to Luke

51It came to pass, when the days were nearthat he should be taken up,he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem52and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans,so as to prepare for him.53They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.54When his disciples,James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”

55But he turned and rebuked them,“You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.56For the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”

They went to another village.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 4:23-28

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 4:23-28

Brethren: Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, which has been created according to God in justice and holiness of truth. Wherefore, put away lying and speak truth each one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down upon your anger; do not give place to the devil. He who was wont to steal, let him steal no longer; but rather let him labor, working with his hands at what is good, that he may have something to share with him who suffers need.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 22:1-14

At ille obmútuit. Tunc dixit rex minístris: Ligátis mánibus et pédibus ejus, míttite eum in ténebras exterióres: ibi erit fletus et stridor déntium. Multi enim sunt vocáti, pauci vero elécti.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 22:1-14

At that time, Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a king who made a marriage feast for his son. And he sent his servants to call in those invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come. Again he sent out other servants, saying, “Tell those who are invited, behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatlings are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.” But they made light of it, and went off, one to his farm, and another to his business; and the rest laid hold of his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. But when the king heard of it, he was angry; and he sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city. Then he said to his servants, “The marriage feast indeed is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy; go therefore to the crossroads, and invite to the marriage feast whomever you shall find.” And his servants went out into the roads, and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; and the marriage feast was filled with guests. Now the king went in to see the guests, and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment. And he said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” But he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind his hands and feet and cast him forth into the darkness outside, where there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.
