First Reading1 Maccabees 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63

From the First Book of Maccabees

10There came out of them a sinful root,Antiochus Epiphanes, son of Antiochus the king, who had been a hostage at Rome, and he reigned in the one hundred thirty seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.

11In those days transgressors of the law came out of Israel and persuaded many, saying, “Let’s go make a covenant with the Gentiles around us;for since we were separated from them many evils have befallen us.”12That proposal was good in their eyes.13Some of the people eagerly went to the king, and he authorized them to observe the ordinances of the Gentiles.14So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem according to the laws of the Gentiles.15They made themselves uncircumcised, forsook the holy covenant, joined themselves to the Gentiles, and sold themselves to do evil.

verses 16–40 are not read41King Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdomthat all should be one people,42and that each should forsake his own laws. All the nations agreed according to the word of the king.43Many of Israel consented to his worship, sacrificed to the idols, and profaned the Sabbath.

verses 44–53 are not read54On the fifteenth day of Chislev,in the one hundred forty fifth year, they built an abomination of desolation upon the altar, and in the cities of Judah on every side they built idol altars.55At the doors of the housesand in the streets they burned incense.56They tore up the books of the lawwhich they found and set them on fire.57Anyone who was found with any book of the covenant, and if any consented to the law,the king’s sentence delivered him to death. verses 58–61 are not read62Many in Israel were fully resolvedand confirmed in themselves not to eat unclean things.63They chose to die, that they might not be defiled with the food, and that they might not profane the holy covenant;and they died.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 119:53, 61, 134, 150, 155, 158

53Indignation has taken hold on me,because of the wicked who forsake your law.

61The ropes of the wicked bind me,but I won’t forget your law.

134Redeem me from the oppression of man,so I will observe your precepts.

150They draw near who follow after wickedness. They are far from your law.

155Salvation is far from the wicked, for they don’t seek your statutes.

158I look at the faithless with loathing, because they don’t observe your word.

GospelLuke 18:35-43

From the Gospel according to Luke

35As he came near Jericho,a certain blind man sat by the road, begging.36Hearing a multitude going by, he asked what this meant.37They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.38He cried out, “Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!”39Those who led the way rebuked him, that he should be quiet;but he cried out all the more,“You son of David, have mercy on me!”

40Standing still, Jesus commanded him to be brought to him. When he had come near, he asked him,41“What do you want me to do?”

He said, “Lord, that I may see again.”

42Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight.Your faith has healed you.”

43Immediately he received his sightand followed him, glorifying God.All the people, when they saw it, praised God.

Prov 31:10-31

Lesson from the book of Proverbs

Prov 31:10-31

When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize. She brings him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She obtains wool and flax and makes cloth with skillful hands. Like merchant ships, she secures her provisions from afar. She rises while it is still night, and distributes food to her household. She picks out a field to purchase; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She is girt about with strength, and sturdy are her arms. She enjoys the success of her dealings; at night her lamp is undimmed. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her fingers ply the spindle. She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy. She fears not the snow for her household; all her charges are doubly clothed. She makes her own coverlets; fine linen and purple are her clothing. Her husband is prominent at the city gates as he sits with the elders of the land. She makes garments and sells them, and stocks the merchants with belts. She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs at the days to come. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and on her tongue is kindly counsel. She watches the conduct of her household, and eats not her food in idleness. Her children rise up and praise her; her husband, too, extols her: Many are the women of proven worth, but you have excelled them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her a reward of her labors, and let her works praise her at the city gates.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 13:44-52

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 13:44-52.

At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to His disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field; he who finds it hides it, and in his joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he finds a single pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net cast into the sea that gathered in fish of every kind. When it was filled, they hauled it out, and sitting down on the beach, they gathered the good fish into vessels, but threw away the bad. So will it be at the end of the world. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from among the just, and will cast them into the furnace of fire, where there will be the weeping, and the gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all these things? They said to Him, Yes. And He said to them, So then, every Scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings forth from his storeroom things new and old.
