First Reading1 Peter 4:7-13

From the First Letter of Peter

7But the end of all things is near.Therefore be of sound mind,self-controlled, and sober in prayer.8And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves,for love covers a multitude of sins.9Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.10As each has received a gift,employ it in serving one another,as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.11If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God.If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies,that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,to whom belong the gloryand the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

12Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trialwhich has come upon you to test you,as though a strange thing happened to you.13But because you are partakers of Christ’s sufferings,rejoice, that at the revelation of his glory you also may rejoice with exceeding joy.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 96:10, 11-12, 13

10Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”The world is also established.It can’t be moved.He will judge the peoples with equity.

11Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice.Let the sea roar, and its fullness!12Let the field and all that is in it exult!Then all the trees of the woods shall sing for joy

13before the Lord; for he comes,for he comes to judge the earth.He will judge the world with righteousness,the peoples with his truth.

GospelMark 11:11-26

From the Gospel according to Mark

11Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem.When he had looked around at everything,it being now evening,he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

12The next day,when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry.13Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves,he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it.When he came to it,he found nothing but leaves,for it was not the season for figs.14Jesus told it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!”and his disciples heard it.

15They came to Jerusalem,and Jesus entered into the templeand began to throw out thosewho sold and those who bought in the temple,and overthrew the money changers’ tablesand the seats of those who sold the doves.16He would not allow anyone to carry a container through the temple.17He taught, saying to them,“Isn’t it written,‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?But you have made it a den of robbers!”

18The chief priests and the scribes heard it,and sought how they might destroy him.For they feared him,because all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

19When evening came, he went out of the city.20As they passed by in the morning,they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.21Peter, remembering, said to him, “Rabbi, look!The fig tree which you cursed has withered away.”

22Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.23For most certainly I tell you,whoever may tell this mountain,‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’and doesn’t doubt in his heart,but believes that what he says is happening,he shall have whatever he says.24Therefore I tell you,all things whatever you pray and ask for,believe that you have received them,and you shall have them.25Whenever you stand praying,forgive, if you have anything against anyone;so that your Father,who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.

Lesson from the book of Joel

Joel 2:23-24; 26-27

Thus says the Lord God: O children of Sion, exult and rejoice in the Lord, your God! He has given you the teacher of justice: He has made the rain come down for you, the early and the late rain as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. You shall eat and be filled, and shall praise the name of the Lord, your God, because He has dealt wondrously with you; My people shall nevermore be put to shame. And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; I am the Lord, your God, and there is no other; My people shall nevermore be put to shame, says the Lord almighty.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 5:17-26

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 5:17-26

At that time, it came to pass on one of the days, that Jesus sat teaching. And there were Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting by, who had come out of every village of Galilee and Judea and out of Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And behold, some men were carrying upon a pallet a man who was paralyzed, and they were trying to bring him in and to lay him before Him. And as they found no way of bringing him in, because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof and lowered him through the tiles, with his pallet, into the midst before Jesus. And seeing their faith, He said, Man, your sins are forgiven you. And the Scribes and Pharisees began to argue, saying, Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God only? But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, answered and said to them, “Why are you arguing in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?” But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins - He said to the paralytic - I say to you, arise, take up your pallet and go to your house. And immediately he arose before them, took up what he had been lying on, and went away to his house, glorifying God. And astonishment seized upon them all, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen wonderful things today.
