Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, or Sunday of the Word of God

Sunday · Ordinary Time · Sunday Cycle A · Psalter Week 3

First ReadingIsaiah 8:23—9:3

From the Book of Isaiah

23But there shall be no more gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time,he brought into contempt the land of Zebulunand the land of Naphtali;but in the latter time he has made it glorious,by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,Galilee of the nations.

1The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death.2You have multiplied the nation. You have increased their joy.

They rejoice before you according to the joy in harvest,as men rejoice when they divide the plunder.3For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as in the day of Midian.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 27:1, 4, 13-14

1The Lord is my light and my salvation.Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life.Of whom shall I be afraid?

4One thing I have asked of the Lord, that I will seek after:that I may dwell in the Lord’s house all the days of my life,to see the Lord’s beauty, and to inquire in his temple.

13I am still confident of this:I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.14Wait for the Lord.Be strong, and let your heart take courage.Yes, wait for the Lord.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17

From the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

10Now I beg you, brothers, through the name of our Lord,Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you,but that you be perfected together in the same mindand in the same judgment.11For it has been reported to me concerning you,my brothers, by those who are from Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you.12Now I mean this, that each one of you says,“I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,”“I follow Cephas,”and, “I follow Christ.”13Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?Or were you baptized into the name of Paul? verses 14–16 are not read17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Good News—not in wisdom of words,so that the cross of Christ wouldn’t be made void.

GospelMatthew 4:12-23

From the Gospel according to Matthew

or Matthew 4:12-17

12Now when Jesus heard that John was delivered up,he withdrew into Galilee.13Leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea,in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,14that it might be fulfilledwhich was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

15“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, beyond the Jordan,Galilee of the Gentiles,16the people who sat in darkness saw a great light;to those who sat in the region and shadow of death,to them light has dawned.”

17From that time, Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”

18Walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers:Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea;for they were fishermen.19He said to them, “Come after me,and I will make you fishers for men.”

20They immediately left their nets and followed him.21Going on from there,he saw two other brothers,James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother,in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.He called them.22They immediately left the boatand their father, and followed him.

23Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every diseaseand every sickness among the people.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

1 Cor 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Brethren: Do you not know that those who run in a race, all indeed run, but one receives the prize? So run as to obtain it. And everyone in a contest abstains from all things - and they indeed to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable. I, therefore, so run as not without a purpose; I so fight as not beating the air; but I chastise my body and bring it into subjection, lest perhaps after preaching to others I myself should be rejected. For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, all were baptized in Moses, in the cloud and in the sea. And all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink for they drank from the spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was Christ. Yet with most of them God was not well pleased.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 20:1-16

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 20:1-16

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. And having agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And about the third hour, he went out and saw others standing in the market place idle; and he said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is just.’ So they went. And again he went out about the sixth, and about the ninth hour, and did as before. But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing about and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They said to him, ‘Because no man has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard.’ But when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers, and pay them their wages, beginning from the last even to the first.’ Now when they of the eleventh hour came, they received each a denarius. And when the first in their term came, they thought that they would receive more; but they also received each his denarius. And on receiving it, they began to murmur against the householder, saying, ‘These last have worked a single hour, and you have put them on a level with us, who have borne the burden of the day’s heat.’ But answering one of them, he said, ‘Friend, I do you no injustice; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go; I choose to give to this last even as to you. Have I not a right to do what I choose? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
