First ReadingGenesis 21:5, 8-20a

From the Book of Genesis

5Abraham was one hundred years old when his son,Isaac, was born to him.

verses 6–7 are not read8The child grew and was weaned.Abraham made a great feast on the daythat Isaac was weaned.9Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.10Therefore she said to Abraham,“Cast out this servant and her son!For the son of this servant will not be heir with my son, Isaac.”

11The thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight on account of his son.12God said to Abraham,“Don’t let it be grievous in your sight because of the boy,and because of your servant. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For your offspring will be named through Isaac.13I will also make a nation of the son of the servant, because he is your child.”14Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a container of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder;and gave her the child, and sent her away. She departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.15The water in the container was spent, and she put the child under one of the shrubs.16She went and sat down opposite him,a good way off, about a bow shot away. For she said, “Don’t let me see the death of the child.”She sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.17God heard the voice of the boy.

The angel of God called to Hagar out of the sky,and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar?Don’t be afraid. For God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.18Get up, lift up the boy, and hold him with your hand. For I will make him a great nation.”

19God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, filled the container with water, and gave the boy a drink.

20God was with the boy, and he grew.He lived in the wilderness, and as he grew up,he became an archer.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 34:7-8, 10-11, 12-13

7This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him,and saved him out of all his troubles.8The Lord’s angel encamps around those who fear him,and delivers them.

10Oh fear the Lord, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.11The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

12Come, you children, listen to me.I will teach you the fear of the Lord.13Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?

GospelMatthew 8:28-34

From the Gospel according to Matthew

28When he came to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes, two people possessed by demons met him there, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce,so that nobody could pass that way.29Behold, they cried out, saying, “What do we have to do with you,Jesus, Son of God?Have you come here to torment us before the time?”30Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding far away from them.31The demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of pigs.”

32He said to them, “Go!”

They came out and went into the herd of pigs;and behold, the whole herd of pigs rushed down the cliff into the seaand died in the water.33Those who fed them fledand went away into the city and told everything, including what happened to thosewho were possessed with demons.34Behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged that he would depart from their borders.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:19-23

Quem ergo fructum habuístis tunc in illis, in quibus nunc erubéscitis? Nam finis illórum mors est. Nunc vero liberáti a peccáto, servi autem facti Deo, habétis fructum vestrum in sanctificatiónem, finem vero vitam ætérnam. Stipéndia enim peccáti mors. Grátia autem Dei vita ætérna, in Christo Jesu, Dómino nostro.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:19-23

Brethren: I speak in a human way because of the weakness of your flesh; for as you yielded your members as slaves of uncleanness and iniquity unto iniquity, so now yield your members as slaves of justice unto sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free as regards justice. But what fruit had you then from those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of these things is death. But now set free from sin and become slaves to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and as your end, life everlasting. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is life everlasting in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 7:15-21

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 7:15-21

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will know them. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore, by their fruits you will know them. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father in heaven shall enter the kingdom of heaven.

Dan 3:40

Sicut in holocáustis aríetum et taurórum, et sicut in mílibus agnórum pínguium: sic fiat sacrifícium nostrum in conspéctu tuo hódie, ut pláceat tibi: quia non est confúsio confidéntibus in te, Dómine.

Dan 3:40

As though it were holocausts of rams and bullocks, or thousands of fat lambs, so let our sacrifice be in Your presence today, that it may please You; for those who trust in You cannot be put to shame, O Lord.

O God, You Who have given us in one perfect sacrifice the fulfillment of the various sacrifices made under the Old Law, accept these sacrificial gifts offered You by Your devoted servants, and make them holy as You did the gifts of Abel, so that what each one of us has offered in praise of Your majesty may profit for the salvation of all.
