First ReadingIsaiah 55:6-9

From the Book of Isaiah

6Seek the Lord while he may be found.Call on him while he is near.7Let the wicked forsake his way,and the unrighteous man his thoughts.Let him return to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him,to our God, for he will freely pardon.8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways,” says the Lord.9“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 145:2-3, 8-9, 17-18

2Every day I will praise you.I will extol your name forever and ever.3Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable.

8The Lord is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and of great loving kindness.9The Lord is good to all.His tender mercies are over all his works.

17The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and gracious in all his works.18The Lord is near to all those who call on him,to all who call on him in truth.

Second ReadingPhilippians 1:20c-24, 27a

From the Letter of Paul to the Philippians

20according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will in no way be disappointed, but with all boldness,as always, now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.22But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work;yet I don’t know what I will choose.23But I am hard pressed between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.24Yet to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake.

verses 25–26 are not read27Only let your way of life be worthy of the Good News of Christ,that whether I come and see you or am absent,I may hear of your state,that you stand firm in one spirit,with one soul striving for the faith of the Good News;

GospelMatthew 20:1-16a

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1“For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a manwho was the master of a household, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.2When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day,he sent them into his vineyard.3He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace.4He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’So they went their way.5Again he went out about the sixthand the ninth hour, and did likewise.6About the eleventh hour he went outand found others standing idle.He said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’

7“They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’

“He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is right.’

8“When evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his manager,‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.’9“When those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius.10When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more;and they likewise each received a denarius.11When they received it,they murmured against the master of the household,12saying, ‘These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to uswho have borne the burden of the dayand the scorching heat!’

13“But he answered one of them,‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong.Didn’t you agree with me for a denarius?14Take that which is yours, and go your way.It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you.15Isn’t it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own?Or is your eye evil, because I am good?’16So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 4:23-28

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 4:23-28

Brethren: Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, which has been created according to God in justice and holiness of truth. Wherefore, put away lying and speak truth each one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down upon your anger; do not give place to the devil. He who was wont to steal, let him steal no longer; but rather let him labor, working with his hands at what is good, that he may have something to share with him who suffers need.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 22:1-14

At ille obmútuit. Tunc dixit rex minístris: Ligátis mánibus et pédibus ejus, míttite eum in ténebras exterióres: ibi erit fletus et stridor déntium. Multi enim sunt vocáti, pauci vero elécti.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 22:1-14

At that time, Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a king who made a marriage feast for his son. And he sent his servants to call in those invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come. Again he sent out other servants, saying, “Tell those who are invited, behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatlings are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.” But they made light of it, and went off, one to his farm, and another to his business; and the rest laid hold of his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. But when the king heard of it, he was angry; and he sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city. Then he said to his servants, “The marriage feast indeed is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy; go therefore to the crossroads, and invite to the marriage feast whomever you shall find.” And his servants went out into the roads, and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; and the marriage feast was filled with guests. Now the king went in to see the guests, and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment. And he said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” But he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind his hands and feet and cast him forth into the darkness outside, where there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
