First ReadingJames 1:1-11

From the Letter of James

1James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,to the twelve tribeswhich are in the Dispersion: Greetings.

2Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.4Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.6But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.7For that man shouldn’t thinkthat he will receive anything from the Lord.8He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

9Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position;10and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass,he will pass away.11For the sun arises with the scorching windand withers the grass;and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So the rich man will also fade away in his pursuits.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 119:67, 68, 71, 72, 75, 76

67Before I was afflicted, I went astray;but now I observe your word.

68You are good, and do good.Teach me your statutes.

71It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn your statutes.

72The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver.

75Lord, I know that your judgments are righteous, that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.

76Please let your loving kindness be for my comfort, according to your word to your servant.

GospelMark 8:11-13

From the Gospel according to Mark

11The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven and testing him.12He sighed deeply in his spirit and said,“Why does this generation seek a sign? Most certainly I tell you,no sign will be given to this generation.”

13He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Thessalonicénses

1 Thess 1:2-10

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians

1 Thess. 1:2-10

Brethren: We give thanks to God always for you all, continually making a remembrance of you in our prayers; being mindful before God our Father of your work of faith, and labor, and charity, and your enduring hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. We know, brethren, beloved of God, how you were chosen. For our Gospel was not delivered to you in word only, but in power also, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much fullness, as indeed you know what manner of men we have been among you for your sakes. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great tribulation, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became a pattern to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For from you the word of the Lord has been spread abroad, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we need say nothing further. For they themselves report concerning us how we entered among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to await from heaven Jesus, His Son, Whom He raised from the dead, Who has delivered us from the wrath to come.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.

Matt 13:31-35

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew

Matt 13:31-35

At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to the crowds: The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. This indeed is the smallest of all the seeds; but when it grows up it is larger than any herb and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and dwell in its branches. He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and buried in three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened. All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without parables he did not speak to them; that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, I will open My mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.

Common

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
