First ReadingDaniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95

From the Book of Daniel

14Nebuchadnezzar answered them,“Is it on purpose,Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you don’t serve my god,nor worship the golden image which I have set up?15Now if you are ready whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music to fall downand worship the image which I have made, good;but if you don’t worship, you shall be cast the same hour into the middle of a burning fiery furnace.Who is that god who will deliver you out of my hands?”

16Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered the king,“Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.17If it happens, our Godwhom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace;and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.18But if not, let it be known to you,O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden imagewhich you have set up.”

19Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the form of his appearance was changed against Shadrach,Meshach, and Abednego. He spoke, and commandedthat they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated.20He commanded certain mighty menwho were in his army to bind Shadrach,Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

verses 21–90 are not read91Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonishedand rose up in haste. He spoke and said to his counselors,“Didn’t we cast three men bound into the middle of the fire?”

They answered the king, “True, O king.”

92He answered, “Look,I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are unharmed. The appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

verses 93–94 are not read95Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said,“Blessed be the God of Shadrach,Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angeland delivered his servants who trusted in him,and have changed the king’s word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

GospelJohn 8:31-42

From the Gospel according to John

31Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him,“If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.32You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

33They answered him,“We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?”

34Jesus answered them,“Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.35A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever.A son remains forever.36If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.37I know that you are Abraham’s offspring, yet you seek to kill me,because my word finds no place in you.38I say the things which I have seen with my Father;and you also do the thingswhich you have seen with your father.”

39They answered him, “Our father is Abraham.”

Jesus said to them,“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.40But now you seek to kill me,a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God.Abraham didn’t do this.41You do the works of your father.”

They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God.”

42Therefore Jesus said to them,“If God were your father, you would love me,for I came out and have come from God.For I haven’t come of myself, but he sent me.

Léctio libri Levítici.

Lev 19:1-2, 11-19, 25

Lesson from the book of Leviticus

Lev 19:1-2, 11-19, 25

In those days, the Lord said to Moses, Speak to the whole Israelite community and tell them: I, the Lord, am your God. You shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another. You shall not swear falsely by My Name, thus profaning the Name of your God. I am the Lord. You shall not defraud or rob your neighbor. You shall not withhold overnight the wages of your day laborer. You shall not curse the deaf, or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you shall fear the Lord your God, because I am the Lord. You shall not act dishonestly in rendering judgment. Show neither partiality to the weak nor deference to the mighty, but judge your fellow men justly. You shall not go about spreading slander among your kinsmen; nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbor’s life is at stake. I am the Lord. You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow man, do not incur sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. Keep my statutes. For I am the Lord your God.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem.

Joann 10:22-38

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 10:22-38

At that time, there took place at Jerusalem the feast of the Dedication; and it was winter. And Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon’s portico. The Jews therefore gathered round Him, and said to Him, How long do You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us openly. Jesus answered them, I tell you and you do not believe. The works that I do in the name of My Father, these bear witness concerning Me. But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them and they follow Me. And I give them everlasting life; and they shall never perish, neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. What My Father has given Me is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch anything out of the hand of My Father. I and the Father are one. The Jews therefore took up stones to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shown you from My Father. For which of these works do you stone Me? The Jews answered Him, Not for a good work do we stone you, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a man, make Yourself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said you are gods?’ If He called them gods to whom the word of God was addressed - and the Scripture cannot be broken, - do you say of Him Whom the Father has made holy and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? If I do not perform the works of My Father, do not believe Me. But if I do perform them, and if you are not willing to believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me and I in the Father.

Holy Cross

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who didst establish the salvation of mankind on the tree of the Cross; that whence death came, thence also life might arise again, and that he, who overcame by the tree, by the tree also might be overcome: Through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
