First Reading1 Kings 18:20-39

From the First Book of Kings

20So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel,and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.21Elijah came near to all the people,and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides?If the Lord is God, follow him;but if Baal, then follow him.”

The people didn’t say a word.

22Then Elijah said to the people,“I, even I only, am left as a prophet of the Lord;but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men.23Let them therefore give us two bulls;and let them choose one bull for themselves,and cut it in pieces,and lay it on the wood,and put no fire under;and I will dress the other bull,and lay it on the wood,and put no fire under it.24You call on the name of your god,and I will call on the Lord’s name.The God who answers by fire, let him be God.”

All the people answered, “What you say is good.”

25Elijah said to the prophets of Baal,“Choose one bull for yourselves,and dress it first, for you are many;and call on the name of your god,but put no fire under it.”

26They took the bull which was given them,and they dressed it,and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon,saying, “Baal, hear us!”But there was no voice, and nobody answered.They leaped about the altar which was made.

27At noon, Elijah mocked them,and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god.Either he is deep in thought,or he has gone somewhere,or he is on a journey,or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”

28They cried aloud,and cut themselves in their way with knivesand lances until the blood gushed out on them.29When midday was past,they prophesied until the time of the evening offering;but there was no voice,no answer, and nobody paid attention.

30Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me!”;and all the people came near to him.He repaired the Lord’s altar that had been thrown down.31Elijah took twelve stones,according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob,to whom the Lord’s word came,saying, “Israel shall be your name.”32With the stones he built an altar in the Lord’s name.He made a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seed.33He put the wood in order,and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood.He said, “Fill four jars with water,and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”34He said, “Do it a second time;”and they did it the second time.He said, “Do it a third time;”and they did it the third time.35The water ran around the altar;and he also filled the trench with water.

36At the time of the evening offering,Elijah the prophet came near and said,“Lord, the God of Abraham,of Isaac, and of Israel,let it be known today that you are God in Israeland that I am your servant,and that I have done all these things at your word.37Hear me, Lord, hear me,that this people may know that you,Lord, are God, andthat you have turned their heart back again.”

38Then the Lord’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering,the wood, the stones, and the dust;and it licked up the water that was in the trench.39When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces.They said, “The Lord, he is God!The Lord, he is God!”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 16:1b-2ab, 4, 5ab and 8, 11

1Preserve me, God, for I take refuge in you.2My soul, you have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord.Apart from you I have no good thing.”

4Their sorrows shall be multiplied who give gifts to another god.Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer,nor take their names on my lips.

5The Lord assigned my portion and my cup.You made my lot secure.8I have set the Lord always before me.Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

11You will show me the path of life.In your presence is fullness of joy.In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

GospelMatthew 5:17-19

From the Gospel according to Matthew

17“Don’t thinkthat I came to destroy the law or the prophets.I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill.18For most certainly,I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away,not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law,until all things are accomplished.19Therefore, whoever shall break one of these least commandmentsand teach others to do so,shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven;but whoever shall doand teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Act 2:14-21.

Deo gratias.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 2:14-21.

In those days, Peter, standing up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke out to them: Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. These men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says the Lord, that I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. And moreover upon My servants and upon My handmaids in those days will I pour forth of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth beneath, blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and manifest day. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Thanks be to God.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 5:12-16

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 5:12-16

In those days, by the hands of the Apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And with one accord they all would meet in Solomon’s portico; but of the rest, no one dared to associate with them, yet the people made much of them. And the multitude of men and women who believed in the Lord increased still more, so that they carried the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and pallets that, when Peter passed, his shadow at least might fall on some of them. And there came also multitudes from the towns near Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those troubled with unclean spirits, and they were all cured.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joannes 6:44-52

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus turbis Judæórum: Nemo potest veníre ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, tráxerit eum: et ego resuscitábo eum in novíssimo die. Est scriptum in Prophétis: Et erunt omnes docíbiles Dei. Omnis, qui audívit a Patre et dídicit, venit ad me. Non quia Patrem vidit quisquam, nisi is, qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem. Amen, amen, dico vobis: qui credit in me, habet vitam ætérnam.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 6:44-52.

At that time, Jesus said to the Jews: No one can come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me draw him, and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the Prophets, “And they all shall be taught of God.” Everyone who has listened to the Father, and has learned, comes to Me; not that anyone has seen the Father except Him Who is from God, He has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, he who believes in Me has life everlasting. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the desert, and have died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that if anyone eat of it he will not die. I am the living bread that has come down from heaven. If anyone eat of this bread he shall live forever; and the bread that I will give is My flesh for the life of the world.
