Sunday · Ordinary Time · Sunday Cycle A · Psalter Week 2

First ReadingExodus 22:20-26

From the Book of Exodus

20“You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him,for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

21“You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child.22If you take advantage of them at all,and they cry at all to me,I will surely hear their cry;23and my wrath will grow hot,and I will kill you with the sword;and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

24“If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor. You shall not charge him interest.25If you take your neighbor’s garment as collateral, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down,26for that is his only covering,it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in?It will happen, when he cries to me,that I will hear, for I am gracious.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51

2I love you, Lord, my strength.3The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer;

3my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.4I call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;and I am saved from my enemies.

47The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock.Exalted be the God of my salvation,

51He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows loving kindness to his anointed,to David and to his offspring, forever more.

Second Reading1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10

From the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians

5and that our Good News came to you not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and with much assurance. You know what kind of men we showed ourselves to be among you for your sake.6You became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,7so that you became an example to allwho believe in Macedonia and in Achaia.8For from you the word of the Lord has been declared, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone out,so that we need not say anything.9For they themselves report concerning us what kind of a reception we had from you,and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God,10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead:Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.

GospelMatthew 22:34-40

From the Gospel according to Matthew

34But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.35One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.36“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”

37Jesus said to him,“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’38This is the first and great commandment.39A second likewise is this,‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’40The whole lawand the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Lectio Epistolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 6:10-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 6:10-17

Brethren: Be strengthened in the Lord and in the might of His power. Put on the armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the Principalities and the Powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness on high. Therefore, take up the armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and stand in all things perfect. Stand, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breast-plate of justice, and having your feet shod with the readiness of the Gospel of peace, in all things taking up the shield of faith, with which you may be able to quench all the fiery darts of the most wicked one. And take unto you the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, that is, the word of God.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 18:23-35

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 18:23-35

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king who desired to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun the settlement, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And as he had no means of paying, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. But the servant fell down and besought him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will pay you all!’ And moved with compassion, the master of that servant released him, and forgave him the debt. But as that servant went out, he met one of his fellow-servants who owed him a hundred denarii and he laid hold of him, and throttled him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ His fellow-servant therefore fell down and began to entreat him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will pay you all.’ But he would not; but went away and cast him into prison until he should pay what was due. His fellow-servants therefore, seeing what had happened, were very much saddened, and they went and informed their master of what had taken place. Then his master called him, and said to him, ‘Wicked servant! I forgave you all the debt, because you entreated me. Should not you also have had pity on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you?’ And his master, being angry, handed him over to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So also My heavenly Father will do to you, if you do not each forgive your brothers from your hearts.

Job 1.1

Job 1.1

There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, simple, and upright, and fearing God, whom Satan besought that he might tempt: and power was given him from the Lord over his possessions and his flesh; and he destroyed all his substance and his children, and wounded his flesh also with a grievous ulcer.

For the Propagation of the Faith

Turn thine eyes, O God, our protector, and look upon the face of thy Christ, who hath given himself as a ransom for all, and grant that from the rising of the sun even unto the setting thereof thy name may be great among the Gentiles, and that in every place there may be sacrifice, and a clean oblation offered to thy name.

Through the same Christ our Lord…

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:

Ps 118:81; 118:84; 118:86

My soul pines for Your salvation; I hope in Your word. When will You do judgment on my persecutors? The wicked persecuted me wrongfully; help me, O Lord my God!
