First ReadingJames 4:1-10

From the Letter of James

1Where do wars and fightings among you come from?Don’t they come from your pleasuresthat war in your members?2You lust, and don’t have. You murder and covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war.You don’t have, because you don’t ask.3You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives,so that you may spend it on your pleasures.4You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you knowthat friendship with the world is hostility toward God?Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.5Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain,“The Spirit who lives in us yearns jealously”?6But he gives more grace. Therefore it says,“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”7Be subject therefore to God.Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.Cleanse your hands, you sinners.Purify your hearts, you double-minded.9Lament, mourn, and weep.Let your laughter be turned to mourningand your joy to gloom.10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 55:7-8, 9-10a, 10b-11a, 23

7I said, “Oh that I had wings like a dove! Then I would fly away, and be at rest.8Behold, then I would wander far off.I would lodge in the wilderness.”

9“I would hurry to a shelter from the stormy wind and storm.”10Confuse them, Lord, and confound their language,

10for I have seen violence and strife in the city.11Day and night they prowl around on its walls.Malice and abuse are also within her.

23Cast your burden on the Lord and he will sustain you.He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

GospelMark 9:30-37

From the Gospel according to Mark

30They went out from there and passed through Galilee. He didn’t want anyone to know it,31for he was teaching his disciples, and said to them, “The Son of Man is being handed over to the hands of men,and they will kill him;and when he is killed,on the third day he will rise again.”

32But they didn’t understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

33He came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house he asked them,“What were you arguing among yourselves on the way?”

34But they were silent, for they had disputed with one another on the way aboutwho was the greatest.

35He sat down and called the twelve;and he said to them,“If any man wants to be first,he shall be last of all,and servant of all.”36He took a little child and set him in the middle of them.Taking him in his arms, he said to them,37“Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me;and whoever receives me,doesn’t receive me,but him who sent me.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corinthios

1 Cor 13:1-13

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 13:1-13

Brethren: If I should speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have charity, I have become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, yet do not have charity, I am nothing. And if I distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, yet do not have charity, it profits me nothing. Charity is patient, is kind; charity does not envy, is not pretentious, is not puffed up, is not ambitious, is not self-seeking, is not provoked; thinks no evil, does not rejoice over wickedness, but rejoices with the truth; bears with all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Charity never fails, whereas prophecies will disappear, and tongues will cease, and knowledge will be destroyed. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; but when that which is perfect has come, that which is imperfect will be done away with. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away the things of a child. We see now through a mirror in an obscure manner, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know even as I have been known. So there abide faith, hope and charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 18:31-43

At ille dixit: Dómine, ut vídeam.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 18:31-43

At that time, Jesus taking to Himself the Twelve said to them, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that have been written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and scourged and spit upon; and after they have scourged Him, they will put Him to death; and on the third day He will rise again. And they understood none of these things and this saying was hidden from them, neither did they get to know the things that were being said. Now it came to pass as He drew near to Jericho, that a certain blind man was sitting by the wayside, begging; but hearing a crowd passing by, he inquired what this might be. And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. And he cried out, saying, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! And they who went in front angrily tried to silence him. But he cried out all the louder, Son of David, have mercy on me! Then Jesus stopped and commanded that he should be brought to Him. And when he drew near, He asked him, saying, What would you have Me do for you? And he said, Lord, that I may see. And Jesus said to him, Receive your sight, your faith has saved you. And at once he received his sight, and followed Him, glorifying God. And all the people upon seeing it gave praise to God.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
