First ReadingIsaiah 58:1-9a

From the Book of Isaiah

1“Cry aloud! Don’t spare!Lift up your voice like a trumpet!Declare to my people their disobedience,and to the house of Jacob their sins.2Yet they seek me daily,and delight to know my ways.As a nation that did righteousness,and didn’t forsake the ordinance of their God,they ask of me righteous judgments.They delight to draw near to God.3‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you don’t see?Why have we afflicted our soul, and you don’t notice?’“Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure,and oppress all your laborers.4Behold, you fast for strife and contention,and to strike with the fist of wickedness.You don’t fast today so as to make your voice to be heard on high.5Is this the fast that I have chosen?A day for a man to humble his soul?Is it to bow down his head like a reed,and to spread sackcloth and ashes under himself?Will you call this a fast,and an acceptable day to the Lord?6“Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen:to release the bonds of wickedness,to undo the straps of the yoke,to let the oppressed go free,and that you break every yoke?7Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry,and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house?When you see the naked,that you cover him;and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?8Then your light will break out as the morning,and your healing will appear quickly;then your righteousness shall go before you,and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard.9Then you will call, and the Lord will answer.You will cry for help, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’“If you take away from among you the yoke,finger pointing,and speaking wickedly;

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 18-19

3Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness.According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.4Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity.Cleanse me from my sin.

5For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.6Against you, and you only, I have sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight,so you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.

18For you don’t delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it.You have no pleasure in burnt offering.19The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.

GospelMatthew 9:14-15

From the Gospel according to Matthew

14Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

15Jesus said to them,“Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will comewhen the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Act 1, 15-26.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 1:15-26

In those days, Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren - now the number of persons met together was about a hundred and twenty - and he said, Brethren, the Scripture must be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit declared before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was the guide of those who arrested Jesus; inasmuch as he had been numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. And he indeed bought a field with the price of his iniquity and, being hanged, burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that the field came to be called in their language Haceldama, that is, the Field of Blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, ‘Let their habitation become desolate and let there be none to dwell in it.’ And, ‘His ministry let another take.’ Therefore, of these men who have been in our company all the time that the Lord Jesus moved among us, from John’s baptism until the day that He was taken up from us, of these one must become a witness with us of His Resurrection.” And they put forward two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, You, Lord, Who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away to go to his own place. And they drew lots between them, and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 11:25-30

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 11:25-30

At that time, Jesus spoke and said, I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You hid these things from the wise and prudent, and revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, for such was Your good pleasure. All things have been delivered to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and him to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden light.

of Apostles

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, to entreat Thee humbly, O Lord, that Thou wouldst not desert Thy flock, O everlasting Shepherd, but, through Thy blessed Apostles, wouldst keep it under Thy constant protection; that it may be governed by those same rulers, whom as vicars of Thy work, Thou didst set over it to be its pastors. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
